How Amazon migrated 7,000+ Oracle databases

Many AWS customers see database migration as among the most challenging initiatives to tackle in their cloud adoption journey due to legacy complexity and potential operational risks. This was similar for Amazon.com that had been running its business since inception predominantly on Oracle database, and continuing to operate this way was no longer viable at Amazon’s operating scale and speed. Amazon executed a complete migration off of its 7000+ production Oracle databases, and has achieved significant cost and agility benefits of running its business on purpose-built AWS database services in the AWS cloud. This session provides an overview of the journey that Amazon.com has taken to migrate Oracle databases to AWS database services, and the business value delivered. We also share best practices and lessons learned along the way to manage such large-scale enterprise transformation.
