Driving Business Value with Amazon Web Services in India

Executive Summary
The jury is now in on cloud. The value of cloud goes beyond cost savings. As organizations in India embrace cloud, they want to leverage their cloud investments for increased agility, thus achieving revenue growth by scaling and innovating faster than ever before. To understand the impact of cloud on IT operations and business strategy more broadly, IDC interviewed Indian organizations running various enterprise workloads on Amazon Web Services (AWS). IDC's analysis of the benefits that organizations in India reported achieving is telling. By deploying applications in the AWS cloud, study participants have not only achieved cost savings and operational efficiencies but also shifted resources to high-impact, value-adding tasks to better deliver products and services to customers. The study shows that the average organization gained annual benefits of US$2.36 million by:
- Reducing capital and operational expenses as workloads moved from an on-premise environment to the cloud. IDC estimates that study participants achieved 25% in cost savings by running equivalent workloads on the AWS platform. On average, participants broke even on their AWS investment in seven months.
- Generating new revenue streams as a result of IT and business agility through the faster and timelier deployment of IT resources. The increased ability to capitalize on new business opportunities enabled the average organization to generate US$5.18 million in additional revenue annually.
- Increasing application resiliency and performance, resulting in less frequent outages and higher-performing business applications. On average, study participants experienced 87% less unplanned downtime with AWS. Line-of-business (LOB) users cited improved user experience, represented by an average of 42% improvement in application performance.

IT Staff Efficiencies
Study participants emphasized that their core IT teams, including IT infrastructure and database teams, work more efficiently on the AWS platform. At a base level, moving to the AWS cloud freed up their time spent handling hardware-related tasks. Day-to-day maintenance and monitoring of IT resources could be automated, thereby saving time and allowing the teams to handled workload growth without commensurate staffing increase - all thanks to various AWS features and capabilities, including:
- Patch automation
- Automated scaling and monitoring
- Automation of security features
- Monitoring and analysis
As a result, IT teams could work more efficiently and effectively. Describing the key features from AWS in better support the business, a retail organization respondent noted, "AWS enabled us to opt for automated infrastructure provisioning, which helped us reduced the time required significantly. Application autoscaling helped us run aggresive campaigns."
